Como ganhar dinheiro escrevendo: Qual o valor do seu livro?

Escrevi vários livros e publiquei alguns deles. Eu tive um grande sucesso considerando meu pequeno status como uma autora independente ou auto publicada. Eu superei de longe as minhas expectativas de venda do livro, e consegui encontrar duas maneiras distintas de fazer uma vida rentável como uma autora publicada.

Não só isso, mas eu tive que aprender a traduzir esse valor para o público certo. E isso era muito mais difícil do que escrever ou editar qualquer romance. Eu já disse isso antes, mas vou dizer novamente: como um autor, você não é um artista, você é um empreendedor. Um pequeno empresário, que provavelmente usou seu próprio capital para investir em sua nova empresa. E esse é um cenário completamente diferente do que ser “um escritor”.

Então, qual é o verdadeiro valor do seu livro?

Vamos começar sendo honestos. Seu livro consegue agregar um valor maior para o consumidor do que a média de preços? Você não pode responder dizendo: “Eu trabalhei muito duro para escrever esse livro e as pessoas devem querer comprá-lo”, ou talvez, “É uma ótima história, é claro que vai trazer valor para o leitor.” Por mais tudo isso possa ser verdade, quantas vezes você comprou um produto porque o dono da loja parecia ter trabalhado muito duro para começar o próprio negócio? Provavelmente só se você for um amigo muito próximo dele. Então aqui vão algumas considerações:

  • O visual do seu livro (capa, logotipo, maraca do livro, edição etc) traz algum tipo de valor estético para o leitor?
  • Você tem contato contínuo com os seus leitores através das redes sociais de forma que os mesmos se sintam inspirados pelo seu trabalho?
  • Quanto do seu tempo foi dedicado melhorando suas habilidades de escrita e marketing?
  • Você tem alguma plataforma única para falar sobre o seu trabalho de uma forma mais específica?
  • Você retribui a sua comunidade ou aos fãs de alguma maneira única através do seu tempo, conhecimento, ou livros físicos de graça, ou com um desconto?
  • Quais estratégias foram criadas para conquistar novos leitores e criar uma fidelidade com aqueles que você já conquistou? As coisas que você publica online incentivam o compartilhamento do seu trabalho?
  • A sua história é diferente o suficiente para fazer com que seus leitores se tornem seus fãs?

Isso deve levá-lo a pensar e responder a algumas perguntas básicas sobre você e sua pequena empresa. Quando eu comecei, eu tinha certeza que eu tinha o próximo NY Times Bestseller em minhas mãos. Mas eu só fui rejeitada por 98 agentes literários que me disseram que não podiam se conectar de nenhuma forma com a minha história.

Hoje, o meu livro é auto-publicado através da minha linha JME Books, onde tem feito muito bem no mercado. Esses agentes estavam errados? Não, claro que não. Na verdade, eles estavam absolutamente corretos em sua dedução. O livro tem um nicho de mercado apertado por causa de sua conexão geográfica local.

Se ele tivesse sido pego por uma imprensa tradicional, ele teria sido bombardeado no seu primeiro ano e arquivado para sempre. Eu provavelmente nunca escreveria mais uma palavra e estaria trabalhando em uma farmácia em algum lugar. Em vez disso, depois desse primeiro ano de bombardeio, eu descobri uma bela mensagem tecida dentro das páginas: BULLYING.

Este é o valor único do meu livro. Uma fantasia com anões e dragões que ensina crianças sobre a sua parte no bullying. Uma vez que meu valor foi determinado, era fácil suprir uma demanda.

Comecei a entrar em contato com as escolas sobre o meu programa anti-bullying. Eles prontamente me pagaram para fazer aparições e ofereceram para comprar exemplares do meu livro ainda na pré-venda, todos para a biblioteca da escola.

De repente, o valor do meu livro cresceu exponencialmente.

Meu livro não tinha mudado, apenas a mensagem que eu tinha construído que agora tinha foco em trazer algum tipo de valor para os meus leitores. Eu mesma dei um passo muito além para agregar mais valor através:

  • Criando um guia de estudo do livro para professores em formato de impressão e e-book.
  • Incluindo normas tanto no guia de estudo como na minha apresentação.
  • Fornecer às escolas um pacote pré-visita para incluir formulários de pedidos do livro, cartazes e vídeo introdutório.
  • Um cartão de agradecimento, uma pesquisa de qualidade do trabalho e um vídeo pós-visita para agradecer aos alunos

Minhas vendas aumentaram tremendamente e eu tenho uma renda que eu nunca previ no meu futuro. Minha paixão por crianças, ensinando e escrevendo se traduziu em um valor único que só eu posso oferecer.
